Arts Award

At The Boo, new for 2017, we’re happy to announce that we’re now an accredited Arts Award Centre. We have various events scheduled within our programme offering children and young people the chance to get creative, feel inspired, develop their performing and making skills, and achieve an Arts Award qualification in the process!

Here’s a bit more about Arts Award and what we have on offer:

What is Arts Award?

Arts Award is a fun and practical course that complements the National Curriculum and is accredited by Trinity College London. It offers children and young people aged 5-25 the chance to get creative, discover new and inventive ways to explore the arts and find inspiration through imagination.

The artist’s world is limitless.  It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away.  It is always on his doorstep.”

(Paul Strand – Photographer)

What is ‘Art’?

Arts Award is not limited to traditional art forms. Children and young people are encouraged to un-earth art in the most un-likely of places. You may want to focus on a critically acclaimed, world famous dance company, or you may like to look closer to home and explore the art within your own garden. The focus is on seeing the world through imaginative eyes.

Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing.  Making your unknown known is the important thing.”

(Georgia O’Keeffe – Painter)

How do I get involved?

New for 2017, we have plenty of opportunities for you to achieve an Arts Award Certificate with us. Just look out for the following events throughout our calendar:

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Craft Afternoon, Friday 2nd June
Junior Puppet Performers, 5th June – 10th July
Fantastic Mr Fox Summer School –31st July – 4th August
Revolting Rhymes Summer School – 14th-18th August
Puppet Festival – 14th-16th July

It isn’t where you came from, it’s where you’re going that counts.”

(Ella Fitzgerald – Singer)

What do the different awards mean?

We currently offer support to 4 different levels of Arts Award.

Discover – Available to children age 5+. You can achieve this award in just 1 day! This year at our annual Puppet Festival, all children aged 5-11 will have the opportunity to achieve a Discover Arts Award and take home a certificate. All you need is one of our Arts Award booklets (available at the start of your trip), which will guide you through a number of activities and tasks, ask you a series of questions, and you must make sure you watch one of our wonderful shows (it can be a free show!).

Explore – Available to children age 7+. Look out for our ‘Explore Events’. Explore is a step up from Discover, so you must be ready to inject that extra bit of imagination, apply that extra bit of analysis and exert that extra bit of effort. Come along to one of our events and we’ll guide you through a series of activities and challenges in order to achieve your certificate.

Bronze and Silver – Available to children age 11+. Not for the faint hearted. In order to achieve a Bronze or Silver Award, you must be ready to use your creativity to the max. Although we don’t currently run a programme for these levels, we do offer schools and other organisations the chance to come to us for help and advice, to meet our artists, take part in workshops, watch shows, and to use us and our work as case-studies. If you’d like more information, please ring us on 01706 220 241 to find out more.

All the world’s a stage.”

(William Shakespeare – Playwright)

What are the benefits?

Arts Award is accredited by Trinity College and is widely recognised and respected by education establishments nationwide, as well as in the workplace.

Arts Award supports the National Curriculum in developing art as a tool for personal achievement, improving analytical skills, and “equipping children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art”i.

At Horse + Bamboo, whatever level you choose, you’ll be working alongside professional artists who are passionate about encouraging the development of children and young people’s creative thoughts and ideas.

We feel Arts Award can help give confidence, encourage friendships, build social skills, provide enrichment and well-being, offer inspiration, develop imagination, and above all, give young people something to smile and feel hopeful about.

Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it

(Andy Warhol – Artist)
