THEATRE THAT BREAKS DOWN BOUNDARIES

Horse + Bamboo has always toured outside of the UK. The fact that our work is non-verbal and the way we use images and music to tell stories lends itself perfectly to crossing and transcending language barriers.

In the early 1980's we toured to nine islands of the Outer Hebrides. The success of our work with Gaelic speakers soon led to an invitation to tour the Gaeltacht in western Eire.

We were also one of the first theatres to tour, post Franco, in Andalucia as part of the Seville International Festival, where we asked to be able to visit the small pueblos outside of the city. By the 1990's we were horse-drawn touring in Hungary and the Slovak Republic, using our horse-drawn transport to take us to small communities from the Ukrainian border, through Roma communities in Slovakia, to working with the United Nations with refugees sheltering from the wars in Croatia and Serbia.

We also began a series of motorised tours in the Netherlands and Belgium, which continued for 5 years. By 2003 and 'Company of Angels' we were working in partnership with 'In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre' of Minneapolis on a series of tours and residencies in the United States.

'Veil' (2007/8) was well received by a Muslim and Middle-Eastern communities. We are currently planning to work with artists in the Kurdish Region of Northern Iraq:

• Exchange ideas and practices - learn from each other
• Take 'Veil' on tour
  
• Run mask and puppet workshops

During its 30 years as a theatre company, Horse + Bamboo has taken its unique blend of visual theatre all over the world.

We are again planning to tour internationally in 2009.
