WHAT DO WE MEAN by 'outside the mainstream'? Well, it's difficult to answer that simply. In England the mainstream is clearly recognisable as a text-based theatre -'drama' - and it's almost impossible to find intelligent reviews, or other information, about work that comes from outside of that tradition, especially if you're not based - or regularly performing - in London.
THE BIGGER PICTURE, of course, isn't the same as the English picture! There's a growing awareness of other, both ancient and modern, theatre traditions.
